BRISTOL, R.I. – Nolan Niziol arrived at �鶹ɫ��Ƭ with a strong aptitude for mathematics and a growing interest in chemistry. What he found was the flexibility to expand those interests into a multidisciplinary path that would ultimately lead him toward a Ph.D.

A senior pursuing a dual degree in Engineering and Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics, Niziol initially planned to study pharmacy. Through �鶹ɫ��Ƭ’s customizable curriculum, however, he discovered new academic directions and the opportunity to design a course of study that aligned more closely with his evolving goals.

“It helped open my eyes a little bit, broadening my mind in terms of what I want to do in the future,” Niziol said.

Niziol distinguished himself early in his academic career, earning the title of Chemist of the Year as a first-year student. He now serves as a tutor in the chemistry department, supporting fellow students while reinforcing his own understanding of complex material.

“It’s definitely nice to help other students who are struggling,” he said. “It not only helps me relearn and reinforce the material, but also allows me to explain it in a different way that might resonate with them.”

In the spring of 2024, Niziol participated in the  (SURF), where he investigated marine diesel engine modifications to reduce exhaust emissions. The hands-on research experience allowed him to design and manage experiments and present his findings, further refining his academic interests.

Niziol credits faculty mentorship as a key factor in shaping his path. Small class sizes enabled him to build strong relationships with professors, often taking multiple courses with the same faculty members. Among them, Professor of Mathematics Koray Özer played a pivotal role in encouraging him to consider graduate study.

“I’ve had him for differential equations as well as multivariable calculus, and we built a relationship over time,” Niziol said. “He was the first person who really introduced the idea that graduate school was an option for me.”

As he approached his senior year, Niziol again turned to Özer for guidance. With support identifying programs, connecting with alumni, and refining application materials, he ultimately decided to pursue a doctoral degree.

On April 13, he committed to a Ph.D. program in chemical engineering at Vanderbilt University.

Reflecting on his time at �鶹ɫ��Ƭ, Niziol points to the university’s interdisciplinary approach and faculty support as central to his academic and professional development. He has also shared his experience with prospective students, emphasizing the value of combining multiple areas of study.

Outside the classroom, Niziol served as a two-year captain of the �鶹ɫ��Ƭ baseball team, leading a 47-player roster while balancing a rigorous academic schedule and tutoring responsibilities. He credits that experience with strengthening his leadership and time-management skills.

“Being an extension of the coaching staff has forced a strong sense of accountability,” he said. “I think that’s made me a better person – on and off the field.”

As he prepares for the next step in his academic journey, Niziol’s experience reflects the impact of �鶹ɫ��Ƭ’s customizable education model – one that empowers students to explore, adapt, and define their own paths in STEM and beyond.
