Education Research Assistant
Job Description
By the end of this internship, the goal is for the student intern to:
- be adept at research.
- familiar with, and able to articulate major issues in academic field.
- have 1-2 publications.
- have experienced presenting at a conference.
- have an identified and developed research agenda.
These skills and accomplishment will ensure that the student is well prepared for their future career, for successful application to graduate school, and poised to be a lifelong researcher.
Year 1
Responsibility/Function
Primarily a research and scholarship internship, student will spend the first year learning basic research techniques to include the following:
- introduction to, and strategies for searching databases
- identifying key issues to be investigated
- learning to identify journals and other resources relevant to their field
- evaluating quantitative and qualitative approaches
- identify seminal work
- introduction to literature reviews
- begin writing project
- evaluate relevant disciplinary conferences
- write conference proposals
Year 2
Responsibility/Function
In year two the student intern will:
- analyze research articles
- deepen knowledge about and apply research techniques
- focus on interviews, observations, surveys and case studies
- content analysis
- continue writing in collaboration with faculty member
- identify appropriate conferences for disciplines
- propose conference presentation in partnership with faculty member
- apply research skills to developing 1-2 literature reviews
Year 3
Responsibility/Function
In year three:
- present at a conference
- submit to a journal
- continue with research on relevant issues in the field
- present to the University community at SASH
*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
