Aquatic Diagnostic Student Research Assistant

Job Description

Students will gain hands-on experience in one of three different ADL branches (Diagnostics Histology, and Research) focusing on pathogens and diseases of invertebrate and vertebrate aquatic species. Students will work directly with other students, lab technicians, lab managers or Dr. Sharon. During the year, it is expected the students learn how to collect and preserve samples from oysters, clams and fish for diagnosis, trim in tissues for histological processing, help with general lab maintenance, produce various solutions which can be used in the lab and/or help with ongoing experiments.

Diagnostics:
Students will aid in disease and pathogen detection in fish and shellfish using molecular techniques (DNA extraction, PCR and qPCR) and traditional methods (Bacteriology and Parasitology). Students may assist with sample collection, preparation, running diagnostic tests, and organizing data.

Histology:
Students in the histology lab, will work and learn tissue preservation, sectioning and assist with slide preparation, staining and scanning.

Research:
Students will get involved with projects focused on fish, shellfish, and environmental health. Students may help collect samples, prepare experiments, design diagnostics, and analyze data.

We ask that interested students are willing to:

  • Have a strong attention to detail
  • Comfortable with handling and dissecting animals
  • Follow standard operating procedures and task lists
  • Work well and respectively with other student workers and staff
  • Be comfortable with physically demanding activities (lifting, climbing on ladders/stepstools, squatting, being on feet for majority of shift, working in wet floor conditions
  • Other tasks can be assigned including: data entry, inventory, or more desk-based work upon request
  • It is possible that students will be asked to prepare samples for and to conduct diagnostic and research based PCRs and other molecular test methods used in the lab
